Jan.19, 2006, Virginia), having moved to Detroit as a teenager in 1955, has sung in gospel groups, before joining R&B band The Falcons (veterans of 1959 US #17 hit  You're so fine) after he is heard singing and playing his guitar on the front porch of his home.

May, 1963: Falcons producer Robert Bateman suggest that Pickett should go solo and arranges an audition with singer Lloyd Price, owner of Double L label. Price signs him, and If You Need Me, a Bateman/Pickett composition, peaks at US #64 (a cover by better-known Solomon Burke makes US #37.)

January 1969 : recording at Muscle Shoals , Pickett covers The Beatles' Hey Jude (at the suggestion of Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band, who plays guitar on it but not credited on single), and it hits US #23 while the original version is still on chart.
